done correctly the first time it is often best left to the professionals.
The first thing to ask yourself is "Can I get a mini digger into my Back garden ?". If the
answer is no
then your in trouble as it will take weeks to dig the hole. You also need to think about how you dispose of the
soil, this will not be cheap. Depending upon what type of soil you have is also a
consideration when you build your koi pond, clay soil will
constantly fill with water when it rains making the construction difficult. Some types of soil will also need shoring
up as it will be forever falling into your pond.
When planning the size of the pond don't forget you will need adequate space for
your filtration. This will be about 25% of your total pond area.
There are two ways to build a concrete koi pond. Both require at least a 6 inches of reinforced with steel concrete
for the base and concrete 9 inch hollow blocks for the walls that are backfilled with concrete during construction. The
walls are then rendered. The difference is the way the Concrete Koi pond is made water
tight. The first way involves applying a fibre glass coating and the second painting with a specialised pond paint.
The filtration area will require about 4 inches of re-enforced
concrete base to support your filter system. Filters are available in many shapes and sizes,
and can be built in situ or brought pre-made and simply connected into your Koi Pond. There are advantages of both. Home made
filters are cheaper to construct and can be designed for your
particular pond size. Pre-made filters are more expensive but
generally will be more efficient. Your design must also consider garden pond pumps, air pumps Ultra Violet boxes etc. This brief
overview of building a concrete koi pond should at least give you an idea of
what's necessary.
I recommend that you at least discuss
your plans with a professionals pond building company before you start to build your own.
