Preformed Pond Liner

Pond building with a preformed pond liner shares many of the same tasks, it only differs slightly. Using a preformed pond liner it is much more important to get the preformed shell level than a flexible pond liner as water will always find the correct level and unlike a liner you don't have the luxury of just building more banking to make the pond appear level. With a preformed pond liner you must make sure that its level during installation and ensure that the preformed pond liner is correctly supported. The preformed pond liners are very strong but the most common mistakes made by pond enthusiasts is not to support the bottom and sites in correctly. As the preformed pond liner is

very strong your installation errors are not noticed until the weight of the water has significantly damaged and reduced the preformed pond liner life span. The installation of a preformed pond liner can be split into two types. Firstly :-

Symmetrical Shape

A Symmetrical shape is by far the easiest type of preformed pond liner to install.

  • The First Step is to put the preformed pond liner upside down in the location where you want your pond and then mark around the edge and peg out with string or hose pipe.
  • Now measure the deepest part of the preformed pond linerand mark out on the ground the deepest area. This can be measured from the preformed pond liner. Once the ground is marked out excavate to the deepest part of the pond. Remove any sharpe edges like roots or stones. Allow about 10cm extra width and depth. If your preformed pond liner contains many shelves then repeat this process until the preformed pond liner is in the ground. Remove the preformed pond liner and line the edges with carpet or use a specialised pond liner product. Then add about a further 5cm of soft sand to fully protect the preformed pond liner.
  • When you are happy that the liner is perfectly level begin to fill with water slowly and back fill any gaps between the pond liner and the ground with sand.
  • Asymmetrical Shape

The technique for a symmetrical shape doesn't work here therefore you need to support the preformed pond liner quite high with bricks to raise it off the ground. Once its high enough push canes into the ground to try and map out on the ground the shape and contours of the preformed pond liner. Peg out the shape and join with string or hose. Repeat for all shelves in the preformed pond liner.

  • Now excavate the map that you have just created to the depth measured in the pond liner allowing an extra 10cm to the depth and width. Remove any sharpe edges like roots or stones. If your preformed pond liner contains many shelves then repeat this process until the preformed pond liner is in the ground. Remove the shell and line the edges with carpet or use a specialised product. Then add about a further 5cm of soft sand to fully protect the preformed pond liner.
  • When you are happy that its perfectly level begin to fill with water slowly and back fill any gaps between the preformed pond liner and the ground with sand. Now leave the water for at least one week or add a pond start product.
